How to Install up to 128 Skins Per Vehicle
First you will need to have the official game patch installed If you need the Game Patch click the linkàPatchesßIf you get problems online we suggest trying the fixes included at the bottom of the patches page.
Now go to your codemasters\Insane\data\vehicles folder then create a new folder in there with the same name as the vehicle idf name
Example #1 - To add more skins for the Baja.idf You
will need to create a folder called - baja
in your - insane\data\vehicles forget
the .idf Now
you have insane\data\vehicles\baja - In that folder you put sets of 3 image files with your or downloaded unique file names as below ---- stands for Your skin name
----EXT.png = main skin / ----CHR.png = damage / ----INT.png = interior ---- INT = interior (cockpit) texture ( You must have an INT file for each skin ) Remember Every vehicle must have its own folder Example #2 - To add more skins for the Hillclimber you will need a folder called wall you should now have codemasters\insane\data\vehicles\wall Then you copy the blabla.png files you wish to add for the Hillclimber into this new folder.
Example #3 - To add more skins for the Utility create a folder called pico So you now have codemasters\insane\data\vehicles\pico Then you copy the blabla.png files you wish to add for the Utility into this new folder.
If you are using a skin but your opponents do not have the latest patch 2 They will only see a set of wheels nothing else. If they have the latest patch but no vehicle folder set up for that vehicle By default they will see their slot 1 skin which ever extra skin you use. If they have the patch and the folder set up they will see the skin they have in their folder. The skin’s come up in the order of file size or by date The skin you see will most likely be different to the skin they see in that position. |
you must realise some vehicles like the soda have 8 different skins where others only have 4. You need to go through the 001etc img.png files by either extracting or previewing to find out what number is what. The skins are in sets of 2 main skin and damage skin you will also find the interior skin to, there are also the vehicle sound files - snd000.wav etc. you need to locate and select the skin you want to replace then hit replace or inject, browse and select the file you want to replace it with then hit inject or save. Remember the files you are replacing with must be the same or smaller size as the one already in the slot.
Files you will see in IDF Expolder
for the pico.idf - Utility
Snd000.wav - revers Snd001.wav - idle Snd002.wav - throttle Snd003.wav - horn Img004.png - skin 1 main skin Img005.png - skin 2 main skin Img006.png - skin 2 damage skin Img007.png - skin 3 main skin Img008.png - skin 3 damage skin Img009.png - skin 4 main skin Img010.png - skin 4 damage skin Img011.png - interior skin Img012.png - skin 1 damage skin
other vehicles are similar

There has been a lot of Confusion on the amount of add-on Maps & Vehicles that we can use in our game folders at the same time. This is to do with a combined space problem in Insane between the Maps and Vehicles they have a shared IDF Limit.
After downloading maps and vehicles and putting them in your game folders you might find that some of your other maps or / and vehicles have disappeared from your in-game lists. Or when you are selecting a map you find that you have a white area where the map should be then you will find that this means that you are over the Limit that you’re allowed,
You can just move them into another folder somewhere else on your drive so that you can swap and change them at any time.
TIP: I found the limit to be around 50 to 60 of each depending on the file size 1 add-on vehicle = 2 or 3 maps depending on the file size Important I advise you to keep all the standard Map’s & Vehicles that was installed with Insane ( Their file names can be found in my IDF Lists under the Standards section )
The main reason for this is If you remove Standard Maps it will effect your generated / random maps If any of the standard maps (or the automap folder located in the maps folder) are missing the game will not function properly when map's are Generated or Randomized.
The names of the Vehicles & Maps don't always correspond to the idf file name Click on the Link Below for the IDF Lists Remember that if you have not completed the Championship mode then some of the Standard Map's & Vehicle's will be locked so you will need to type the codes below to unlock them. Or use the Saved Game file = Player00.chp on the right.
If you are trying to use downloaded maps or Vehicles in single player mode you will need to type the Codes below for them to appear in the lists.

You can also use the addon maps by selecting a multiplayer game and hosting it without going online

Qustion: How can I solve my steering wheel problem ?
Answer: Note Insane only supports 1 controller so you will need to disconnect any other game controllers that are plugged in to your system. get the game patch (available at link above or on main page) install patch 2 to your Insane folder / overwrite files when it asks.
When you calaberate the wheel press and hold the pedals half way and Release all controls will disappear You can define controls starting from this situation. Some Wheels need Force Feedback Disabled |

Replacing The Flag, Zone, Driver & Gauge
Before replacing any of these make a backup of your Vehicles.idf & data.idf then put them in a safe place.
Remember the file that you are replacing with must be the same size or smaller to the one in the slot you are replacing
To replace the Flag:
use idfexploder open the vehicles.idf in your insane\data folder then inject or replace img002.png then save
To replace the Zone:
use idfexploder open the data.idf in your insane\data folder then inject or replace img018.pcx then save
To replace the Gauge:
use idfexploder open the data.idf in your insane\data folder then inject or replace img003.png then save
To replace a Driver Skin:
use idfexploder open the data.idf in your insane\data folder then inject or replace img006.pcx then save |
